White oak flooring installation

This project began with the demolition and removal of multiple layers of very old flooring materials including linoleum tiles, concrete and area carpet. In many areas the subfloor was damaged and required repairs.

Pulling up the area rug revealed this area which was particularly degraded. It looked like it suffered some major insect as well as water damage in the past. The cause of the damage appears to have been dealt with as the area is dry and there is no evidence of on going insect activity. The old repairs have failed dramatically, though, causing sagging and soft spots.

I removed as much of the damaged areas as possible and replaced it with sound material. Humps were leveled out and voids filled.

With the floor leveled, next I put down a layer of felt, this adds a cushioning barrier that also helps unify the various substrates.

After acclimating on site for several weeks (perhaps not long enough or alternatively, don’t try to do this during the most humid summer months like I did), the flooring went down.

And finally after lots of sanding and three coats of Absco waterborne floor finish…
